Posers
I hear from time to time that I have a mean, unapproachable face. I'm starting to think its true. Because no one like this has ever asked me if I was reporter while I was on the train.A good friend of mine in New York City rides the A train from his apartment in Bed Stuy in Brooklyn to his internship this summer and, later this fall, to his law school Lower Manhattan.
For some reason this one day last week, he was writing in a reporter-style notebook. I presume he was writing himself thoughts or reminders, a grocery list or maybe even a recipe for egg foo yong. The point is I don't know.
As fate would have it, they had a long conversation about her art, about his law school training. In fact, I think they planned to meet up for lunch at some point.
What I do know is that personally, I write in my notebook all the time. I ride the subway everyday; on my way to games or other assignments, I jot down notes to myself if only to remember that I wrote it down sometime, somewhere. Either way, no one -- like this -- has ever came up to me and asked me about who I was.
You know my friend couldn't wait to tell me.
Hmph.
I just hope they talk about this. And where it's going to go in the Sanderberg living room or my bedroom. Marcus, what you think? continue...

Very few people have approached me to ask if I'm a journalist. And when they do, and I explain to them I'm relatively new, the converstation always meanders to whether I want to go into broadcast journalism -- as an anchor.
It's like, to most people, that's the ultimate job as a journalist: read a teleprompter and look ugly on camera.
I. Don't. Want. To. Do. That.
I've digressed...
No, what's better is when you make the mistake of telling people that you're a journalist (I actually have never been asked whether I was), and then they tell you...
"You should write an article about me."
Really? Really, Senor Idioto? Okay, fine. I'll get right on it.
(Yes. I've been annoyed.)
Poor Darren Sands. I'll give you some tips offline. And props to your "friend". I'll big him up when I see him next ;)
P.S. Bear in mind that the notebook may not have triggered the conversation.
LOL thank you Keri. But she definitely asked Laurent if he was a reporter. At least that's how the story went.
ooooh - you just revealed the identity. oooooh.
Since I cover crime a in a small town, I tend to meet some older long-time residents of the neighborhoods headed down hill.
So I get the "you're making the black race proud" speech. And they reference the one black TV reporter who I am cool with and I get his whole life story for the hundredth time.
being that I'm a Libra, the mood swings are ignorant, but never on the clock. As soon as people see the notebook and the camera, they ask, I answer and it's on, LOL...I'm good for holding court at halftime of games with parents and spectators, just talking about what I love about this business and what I think of the game so far. My during-work-hours affability has paid off in a lot of situations, especially this project I'm working on now (coming to a Ten95 post near you :] )
